Netflix just raised their prices 60%

Netflix just went and raised their prices by 60%. Currently for unlimited streaming and 1 DVD out at a time the price is $9.99 per month. For new customers this price just skyrocketed to $15.98 per month ($7.99 for streaming and $7.99 for DVDs). Existing customers get a reprieve until September 1st (a fact they have yet to email current customers about). This is going to make customer loyalty go down a lot. I also suspect their gross revenue to go down as they will lose customers or customers will either cut streaming or cut DVDs (I for one will be dropping the DVDs by mail). It will probably increase their profit margins though.
Basically for most customers at best the customers who are paying $7.99 a month for 1 at a time the DVDs are going to get no more than 8 DVDs a month, making the price the same as getting 8 movies at Redbox or Blockbuster Express. Yes getting DVDs by mail is convenient, but when most of the movies say Long Wait or Very Long Wait for months after they are released I might as well go to Redbox and get the movie I want right away. Redbox almost always has copies of the new movies. For most people they are also within a 2 minute drive of where they live. Apparently investors do like this strategy since Netflix stock went up $12 in overnight trading. I think this is temporary however until their next quarterly earnings statement comes out.
Shame on you Netflix I hope you rethink this strategy.

Blockbuster Express Code good for Friday, April 22 & Saturday, April 23. Blockbuster Express is giving out the code because this location will be closed on Easter. The code is “THANKYOU” the sign I saw was in a Publix so I am not sure if the code is good elsewhere, but you could always try.

New Star Trek on Netflix streaming

For a while the only Star Trek on Netflix streaming was The Original Series Season 1. Looks like that has been taken down and replaced with Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home and Star Trek: First Contact. Hopefully they’ll add more soon.

A New Webb for Spider-Man

I am really not excited about Sony rebooting Spider-Man already. In my opinion it is way to early for a reboot. If Spider-Man is not doing well, work on some other superheroes for a while and reboot Spider-Man in 2014 or 2015. Sam Rami and company were doing a better than average job with the first 3 Spider-Man movies. I had heard rumors of possibly Carnage, Black Cat or Lizard being in the Sam Rami version of Spider-Man 4. I think I would have enjoyed Carnage the most. They could have had the destructive nature of Venom, without all the Peter Parker strutting around Manhattan all emo. If they had done Lizard, there probably would have been too much time spent on long whiny story of Peter not wanting to battle his former professor. Don’t get me wrong, I really want a good story out of any movie I see, not just all action, but there is too much time spent on Peter Parker’s story and not enough on all the other characters in the Spider-Man movies. Black Cat would have been a pretty good choice as well, although I am sure Mary Jane would have become really whiny really quick as well.
